D for defense for self!

“Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self defence against a homicidal maniac”-George Orwell. When Identical Twins do not have identical fingerprints, then how can you expect the people around you anywhere to be good to you in behaviour or intensions? Would  you be able to defend yourself and the loved ones if someone were to physically attack you? Would you take a step forward or backward to protect self?

Please remove  the wrong notion from your mind that to defend oneself from attacker, one needs to know Karate or should have got a  fine training in martial arts, though let me assure you Karate is helpful in building Concentration skills, Balance, Control, Respect, Humility, the most important Self Confidence that are developed  through the training drills and the practice of kata-a series of movements, much like a dance choreography with the use of karate techniques.

But yes there are several effective self-defence  techniques which  I would like to highlight upon. Before I begin, let me first remind you that prevention is the best self- defence. Attackers, whatever their objectives are, be sure to follow general safety tips like being aware of the surroundings, only walking and parking in a well-lit areas, keeping your keys in hands as you approach your door or car, varying your route and times of travel.

Attacker’s Anatomy : where to strike ?

What should be your prime goal? Remember  your goal  must be to escape and not to beat  the tar   out of assailant. So concentrate on the pressure point. Pressure points are the areas extremely susceptible to incapacitate pain or injury, therefore can be valuable tool for women’s as well as men’s  self-defence. Examples of effective points for self-defence would be groin, windpipe, or nose. Nerve centres are the areas concentrated with relatively exposed nerves  and  are particularly vulnerable to pain, such as shin, in the lower portion of leg.

As soon as the attacker  touches you or it’s clear that escape isn’t possible, shout loudly “BACK OFF!” and push back at him or her. This helps achieve two things : it signals for help and it lets the attacker know you’re not an easy target. Confidence to face them is auto generated.

Depending on the position of the attacker and how close he is will decide the  next stance. Do not step in closer, say, to strike his nose with your hand, when you can reach his knee with a kick.

Imagine  you are grabbed by some sturdy man from behind, well  do not panic in such situation.  Throw your head back as far as possible and try to head butt your assailant’s nose. You should try to jerk your head back, being careful not to jar your own neck and aim for the bridge of his nose. The intention is that your attacker releases you in order to grab hold his painful nose, giving you vital seconds to run away.
Now you would ask a question what if the attacker is taller compared to you?

If you find this difficult then not to worry.  Another effective way   to throw off your attacker is to run your heel down the front of their shin, which is the prominent bone found in the lower part of the leg. No matter how well built or masculine your attacker may be, this is a fine bone which tends to stick out. Simply lift up your heel and scrape your heel down the front of your assailant’s shin bone as hard as possible. For  guaranteed results, there are many foot wears  available to create the maximum damage, but heels are even better.

Now assume your attacker is heading towards you and you are baffled to which pressure point to concentrate upon or say the intended victim is smaller than the attacker, then? Grab his ear with your fingers and press your thumb firmly along the whole of his eye to push him back. Almost anything like grouching, poking or scratching the attackers eye with your fingers or knuckles would be effective, giving you precious time to flee.

Poking your fingers into your attacker’s windpipe, the part of the air passage found below the Adam’s apple quite work as well. Try to press your fingers rather than thumb into the space between the Adam’s apple and the top of the breastbone as hard as possible. This has the effect of closing the air passage making difficult for your attacker to breathe.

When you are walking in the street at night, get into the habit of carrying your keys in one hand and making a fist with one of your keys pushed between your middle fingers. If you are attacked, make an upward movement towards your assailant’s face and slash his cheek with your key. This would give a powerful impact on the attacker making you potent enough to handle the situation.

All these techniques are true but then it’s up to you how you manage to escape from such attacks, remember your aim must be protect self. I would  rather second with Michael Janiach who said “Knowing self defence is something everyone should be concerned with. No one has the right to hurt you, ever. ”, because you are special.
